Monemvasia

A Journey Through Time, Where Stone Meets the Sea

Visit Monemvasia

The Castle of Monemvasia is one of the most impressive and atmospheric places in Greece. Located on the southeastern coast of the Peloponnese, it was shaped during the medieval period on the massive rock that rises directly from the sea. This enormous rock is hidden from view from the mainland, a natural feature that once helped protect its inhabitants from enemy attacks.

Access to Monemvasia was originally possible only by sea. Later, a stone-paved causeway was built to connect the castle entrance with the mainland, giving the town its name: Monemvasia, meaning “single entrance”. The modern town was later developed directly opposite the rock.

Walking through the narrow streets of the castle is a true journey into the past, while the view across the sea from the top of the rock is simply breathtaking.
