Mystras
Visit Mystras
In 1249, William II of Villehardouin, ruler of the Frankish Principality of Achaea, built a powerful fortress on the summit of the naturally fortified hill of Myzithras in Lacedaemon. This fortress was destined to play a decisive role during the final centuries of the Byzantine Empire, until its conquest by the Ottomans in 1460.
From 1262, when Mystras came under Byzantine control, a brilliant period of prosperity began. The hillside filled with houses, mansions and palaces, while churches and fortified monasteries were built throughout the settlement. Densely populated and vibrant, the city was protected by two defensive walls, transforming Mystras into one of the most important medieval centres in the Greek world.
A visit to Mystras is a deeply immersive experience, where history, architecture and landscape come together effortlessly.
